Mini Disc Recording Tips

MiniDisc is a recordable disc format introduced by Sony in 1992. The format uses ATRAC compression (Adaptive TRansform Acoustic Coding), a lossy audio compression codec, to be able store up to 80 minutes of music on the smaller discs. The discs themselves come in cartridges. MiniDiscs can be used by musicians to record demos, for live sound recording and to record old cassettes and other formats.
  1. Getting prepared

    • MiniDisc recorders come as both portable units and full professional units for home and studio use. Both types of recorders have multiple inputs. You can connect a pair of condenser microphones, digital sources (TOSLINK or S/DPIF) and an analog line. Connect whatever source your recording from to the MiniDisc recorder.

    Power

    • Install fresh batteries into the recorder for any longer recording project if you are using a portable unit. Choose the length of disc for your project; blank minidiscs are available in 60 minute and 74 minute lengths.

    Select Compression

    • MiniDisc, like MP3, has multiple bit rates to choose from for the compression of the music. High quality recording can be done at 292 kbps (kilobits per second). You can increase the recording time by reducing the quality setting or choosing mono recording. Once you have chosen the bit rate, start recording by pressing Record on the unit.
