How to Clean a Mixing Board Fader

Audio mixing consoles, or sound boards, are complex pieces of technology used to combine various sound channels into one cohesive mix. Due to the complexity of the board, prices range anywhere from a few thousand to a few hundred thousand for a new console. Dirt and moisture are two of the main enemies a console faces. With that in mind, you are well advised to clean your console regularly, in order to protect your monetary investment and ensure a long life of trouble-free sound recording bliss.

Things You'll Need

  • Vacuum cleaner with dusting attachment
  • Wide, soft paint brush
  • Can of compressed air

Instructions

    • 1

Use the dusting attachment with the vacuum to carefully dust the mixing board daily. This will keep it clean. In the event that you are unable to keep up a daily vacuuming regimen, move on to step two for a more in-depth cleaning procedure.

    • 2

Take the paint brush and begin brushing downward from the top of the board to the bottom in single strokes. This will wipe away any surface dust without scratching the finish or removing any of the paint used to mark the faders, switches and potentiometers. At the end of each stroke, shake the dust from the brush (away from the console) before moving to the next stroke. Make sure the brush hairs get underneath the potentiometer and fader knobs.

    • 3

Repeat step two from left to right until the entire surface of the board has been swept. Take extra care to get into the crevices at the edges and where any faceplate seams meet.

    • 4

Insert the small straw that comes with the compressed air canister into the canister’s nozzle.

    • 5

Use a short blast from the compressed air canister to spray out the top of the fader slot in channel one, then move the fader to the top of the channel.

    • 6

Insert the straw’s tip into the top of the slot, just below the fader knob. Aim the straw into the slot and toward the bottom of the lowest position in the channel. Spray the air into the slot as you move your hand downward toward the bottom of the channel in one continuous motion, allowing the air to spray into the slot, pushing any dust or foreign debris down and out at the base of the console.

    • 7

Repeat steps five and six through every slot until the entire console has been dusted.
