How to Copyright a Song in Canada

You don't have to be a big-time Canadian entertainer such as Celine Dion to find yourself in the middle of a copyright controversy. Independent artists and bands face the threat of having their material stolen every time their tunes are downloaded. Unlike the superstars, however, these performers don't have the financial resources to fight the thieves. But there are ways for artists and bands to ensure their songs are safe and will not be copied without permission.

Instructions

    • 1

Burn your song on a CD. Include on the CD the name of your song, the date the song was written, the names of the songwriters and the recording date.

    • 2

Write your lyrics down on a piece of paper.

    • 3

Mail a copy of the CD and lyrics to yourself via Canada Post registered mail.

    • 4

File your package away when you receive it. Make sure the package is not opened; this guarantees the legitimacy of the contents.

    • 5

Register your song with a performing rights and mechanical society such as the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada or the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency Ltd. Although you will have to pay a membership fee, these organizations ensure that your song is properly copyrighted and that you are paid royalties every time your song is played on the radio.
