Download an audio software. Some good choices are Cubase, Pro Tools and FL Studio. If you prefer to use free software, a few options are Audacity, Acid Xpress and the demo version of FL Studio. The FL Studio Demo Version has some advantages over other free software, but keep in mind that it will not let you save your projects. Instead, you will need to export your beats into audio files before you close the program, and import them when you want to continue working on them (see Step 6 for exporting audio).
Download audio samples or loops. Loops are one or a few combined samples that are repeated in order to create a longer sample. Thousands of samples and loops are available for purchase online. Websites such as Free-Loops.com and SampleMagic.com offer samples, loops and demo packs for free. Musicbootcamp has a long list of websites that offer free downloads. One advantage of FL Studio is that it comes with built-in samples.
Open a new track. To start making your beats on your new audio software, you have to create separate tracks for your samples; simply go to the "Track" menu, and select "New Track." Note that Acid Xpress only offers 10 tracks. If you need more, you will have to combine a few tracks by exporting them as one audio file, so you will have extra tracks to work with.
Import an audio sample. In most programs, you can click on the track to highlight it, then go to "File," "Import," "Audio File" and choose the file you want to work with. In Acid Xpress you have to locate the file from folder menu on the bottom left, and select "Add to Track." Copy the imported sample and place it wherever you wish on the timeline. Most programs are set by default to 4 beats per bar. The most basic beat would be a bass drum on the 1st and 3rd beats and a snare on 2nd and 4th. This beat will sound dull on its own, so add more samples to complete the drum set. You can also insert a full drum loop, then add other instrument samples on top. Add as many samples as needed to get a full harmonic beat.
Mix your beat. Once you have a good solid beat, open the mixer (usually located under the "view" menu), and adjust the volume levels of each track. Creating the right balance can make a huge difference to your beats. You can also experiment with some of the built in EQs, or effects, to give your beat a unique sound.
Export your beat. When you're done mixing, export your beat into the desired audio format by clicking on "File," then "Export." Save the project before exiting the program, in case you'll want to make changes to your beat in the future.
