Sound Devices 702 Specifications

The Sound Devices model 702 portable digital audio recorder is a battery-powered professional grade component used in stereo recording applications. It offers support for a range of different digital audio qualities and formats including both compressed and uncompressed file types. For maximum flexibility, the Sound Devices 702 also uses industry standard batteries and storage media.
  1. Dimensions

    • Designed for portable applications, the Sound Devices 702 weighs just 2.1 pounds without a battery. It measures 1.8 inches tall, 8.2 inches wide and 4.9 inches deep and can operate in temperatures ranging from 41 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit with up to 80 percent relative humidity.

    Inputs and Outputs

    • Both powered microphone inputs as well as a line level analog input are included on the 702. Its microphone inputs support professional powered XLR microphones. It also has line level analog outputs as well as S/PDIF digital inputs and outputs over BNC ports. The 702's digital timing system also has BMC inputs and outputs. For connectivity, the 702 offers a Firewire port as well as serial C. Link inputs and outputs for use with other Sound Devices components.

    Power Requirements

    • Sound Designs builds the 702 to operate without external power using a standard 7.2 volt Sony M- or L- type rechargeable lithium-ion camcorder battery. It can also use an external 10 to 18 volt and one amp power supply with a four-pin connector to both power the device and charge the battery.

    Recording Formats

    • For maximum quality, the Sound Designs 702 supports sampling rates as high as 192 kilohertz with both 16- and 24-bit resolution. It can save files as uncompressed PCM audio in WAV format or as losslessly compressed FLAC format files as well. This digital audio recorder can also play back WAV files, FLAC files or MP2 and MP3 format compressed files.

    Noise and Distortion

    • Sound Devices rates the 702 to have a wide frequency response curve from 10 hertz to 40 kilohertz within 0.1 decibels above and 0.5 decibels below perfectly flat. Both the analog microphone and line outputs are rated for no more than 0.004 percent total harmonic distortion. Noise floors are also quite low, ranging from -128 to -133 unloaded decibels depending on the exact type of microphone and the settings of the 702's controls. Its analog to digital converters are also capable of a 114 decibel dynamic range.
