How to Use a Multitrack Recorder

Recording and writing music on a multitrack recorder is relatively simple, depending on how many instruments are to be recorded. A multitrack recorder with eight tracks is the standard for most recording devices; however, there are multiple types available, ranging from four tracks to as high as 16 tracks. Most multitrack recorders are set up for ease of recording: Plug in, play and record.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the multitrack recorder in a noiseless room, where there will be minimal interruptions. Adjust the level of the first track to unity gain, which is the standard level for recording a sound. Experiment with the instrument that is to be recorded. If the recording is peaking and breaking up, the levels are set too high.

    • 2

Start recording the instrument by pressing the "Record" button. Press "Stop" once the desired piece of music is recorded.

    • 3

Play back the recording, and adjust the volume to a suitable level. This is the recording that all other tracks will be recorded off of.

    • 4

Record the desired remaining number of tracks. Once all are completed, continue to listen to the recordings, and adjust the volume levels so that every instrument can be heard clearly enough.

    • 5

Complete the recording by burning the files on a built-in CD burner, which some multitrack recorders come with, or transport the file via USB cable to a computer and burn to a CD.
