How to Eliminate Hiss From a Recording

When you are recording audio, certain unwanted sounds such as hiss may find their way into your recording. You can remove this sound, yet keep the rest of the recording intact, with an audio editing program such as Adobe Audition. Most of these programs have a noise reduction filter. You have to show the program what the noise sounds like. It then removes that sound automatically.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your recording in your audio editing software. Select "File," then "Open," from the top menu.

    • 2

Highlight a portion of your track in which you can hear only the hiss. This will usually occur when one person finishes speaking and before another begins. The portion does not need to be long; about one second will be enough.

    • 3

Select "Effects" and "Noise Reduction" from the top menu. Select "Set Noise Profile." (Depending on the software used, this command may be called something different, such as "Capture Noise Profile.") The program will now "learn" the characteristics of the hiss sound. When the process is finished, click the "Close" button.

    • 4

Highlight your entire track, either with your mouse or by pressing the "Control" and "A" keys.

    • 5

Select "Effects" and "Noise Reduction" again. Select "Noise Reduction." Click the "Play" button to hear what your track will sound like with the noise removed.

    • 6

Move the "Threshold" slider until you cannot hear the hiss. If your recording sounds as if too much has been taken away from it, move the "Amount" slider until it sounds natural again. Select "OK." The program will remove the hiss.
