Open the software and "Load" or "Import" the vocals into the program. Click to highlight the vocals and click the "Sound Effects" or "Effects" tab at the top of the screen. Select the "Gate" tab from the list of options.
Set the "Threshold," "Ratio" and "Attack" options to the center. Slowly turn the "Threshold" button to the left until the vocals get deeper. Apply "Attack" to the vocals by moving the "Attack" button to the right until the song balances out. The background noise will be lower than the original recording.
Press the "Play" button to preview the vocals. Select "Effects" from the top and click the "Compression" or "Compressor" option. Adjust the "Decay," "Threshold" and "Attack" button to the center. Slowly turn the "Attack" button to the right until the vocals sound very soft. Move the "Threshold" button to the right until you reach the vocal volume you're looking for.
Select the "EQ" option from the "Effects" menu and place all of the sliders in the center. Move the sliders up slowly from left to right until you get slight feedback. Move the last three sliders to the left down until the feedback fades away. Press the "Play" button to preview the vocals while you adjust the "EQ."
