Silent Night was originally a German poem written in 1816 by Joseph Mohr with music composed in 1818 by Franz Gruber. It was first performed on Christmas Eve 1818 in the St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. The first recording of Silent Night was made in 1905 by the Victor Talking Machine Company in Camden, New Jersey, United States. The recording was made by a group of singers from the Metropolitan Opera.
