How to change the radio in a 2002 Toyota Tacoma?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Phillips-head screwdriver

- Flat-head screwdriver

- New car radio (single-DIN or double-DIN)

- Wiring harness adapter (if needed)

- Antenna adapter (if needed)

Instructions:

1. Disconnect the Battery

- Turn off the engine and wait for the headlights to turn off completely.

- Locate the negative (-) battery terminal and loosen the nut with a wrench.

- Remove the negative battery cable and set it aside.

2. Remove the Old Radio Trim

- Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry open the small cover located on the left side of the radio trim.

- Remove the two Phillips-head screws behind the cover.

- Use the flat-head screwdriver to pry open the small cover located on the right side of the radio trim.

- Remove the two Phillips-head screws behind the cover.

- Gently pry the radio trim out from the dashboard.

3. Remove the Old Radio

- Remove the four Phillips-head screws that secure the old radio to the dashboard.

- Disconnect the wiring harness from the back of the old radio.

- Disconnect the antenna cable from the back of the old radio.

- Remove the old radio from the dashboard.

4. Install the New Wiring Harness Adapter (if needed)

- If your new radio does not have a Toyota-specific wiring harness, you will need to install a wiring harness adapter.

- Connect the wires from the wiring harness adapter to the corresponding wires on the back of the new radio.

- Secure the wiring harness adapter in place with electrical tape.

5. Install the New Antenna Adapter (if needed)

- If your new radio does not have a Toyota-specific antenna connector, you will need to install an antenna adapter.

- Screw the antenna adapter onto the back of the new radio.

- Connect the antenna cable from the vehicle to the antenna adapter.

6. Install the New Radio

- Slide the new radio into the dash opening.

- Secure the radio in place with the four Phillips-head screws.

- Connect the wiring harness to the back of the new radio.

- Connect the antenna cable to the back of the new radio.

7. Test the New Radio

- Turn on the ignition and test the new radio.

- Make sure that all of the features work properly.

8. Reinstall the Radio Trim

- Reinstall the radio trim in the reverse order that you removed it.

9. Reconnect the Battery

- Reinstall the negative battery cable and tighten the nut.

- Turn on the ignition and test the new radio again.
