A choir music workshop is an opportunity for choir members to brush up on their knowledge of choral performance, practice new and established choral methods, and study with teachers of choral history and performance.
A workshop can function in any number of ways. Typically, it gives choral members an opportunity to continue their training and education. Secular choir music workshops may focus on a particular style of music, while church choir workshops may focus on the liturgical or worship functions.
A professional choir director (or several directors) with previous seminar experience typically leads a choir music workshop. The director, or guest speaker, may lead discussion on the history of choral performance in the church or secular setting, as well as conduct intensive rehearsals aimed at improving members' overall vocal performances.
A choir music workshop may feature a number of agenda items, depending on the audience. For instance, gospel choir workshops often focus on sight reading, appropriate breathing, body movement and clapping. An orthodox church choir workshop may focus on such things as church singer duties, tones and melodies associated with that type of worship music.
Choir music workshops can range from beginner-level to professional seminars. While some churches or secular choirs may pay for or defray some of the cost of attending, a workshop can often cost from around $20 to $300 depending on where it is and how extensive it is.
