Go to the website of the Electronic Copyright Office (eCO) (see References). Electronic filing is a convenient and fast way to file when you want to copyright your material. However, your music material has to be within the guidelines of the Copyright Office whether you choose to apply on line or send your music works by mail.
Register or log in to access application. You need a user ID to log in to site. If you don't have a log-in ID and password, click on the link that reads "If you are a new user, click to register." Various prompts and windows will appear and request your information.
Fill out the application on line. The application will guide you step by step. Choose to register a new claim and then the type of work to file. You will pick "Work of the Performing Arts (lyrics)." You will then add a title of work and continue to follow the other prompts answering questions according to your work.
Pay for copyright service. You can pay either by credit card or debit card. Before you upload your work, you will have to pay for copyright service. Copyright also gives you the option to pay by electronic funds transfer or via a copyright office deposit account. Once you pay for the copyright service, you are prompted to upload your music material.
Upload your music material. Whether you choose to upload your musical work or send it by mail, there are specific format guidelines to follow. The website provides a list of formats for text, video, audio and other formats. If your music is not in those formats, you will have to convert it to a proper format before you upload or send it by mail.
