What Are Corridos?

Corridos are narrative songs from Mexico detailing important historical events and life experiences. Although traditional corridos surged after the Mexican Independence War and during the Mexican-American Revolution, its resurgence in the late 19th century was do in part to German immigrants who settled in northern Mexican regions.

    • Corridos surfaced during the mid 1800s during wartime in Mexico. Taking the poetry narrative format from Spanish-European songs, corridos were used to tell a story about heroes like Pancho Villa. Mexican Americans also used corridos to detail their accounts of adaption and struggles in the United States as well.

    Genre

    • Corridos fall under the genre of popular folk Mexican music. As of 2010, Norteno (Nothern) and Texas Mexican (Tex-Mex) musical groups still remain the main composers of corrido songs in the music industry.

    Market

    • Corridos still continue to be a staple of Mexican music history as of 2010, and are utilized to present current struggles and political issues in today's society. Because its message resonates with people young and old, it has created a wide market for fans throughout Mexico and the border region.
