Games to Learn Note Names in Music

In order to learn note names, you will need to learn their position on a treble clef staff and on a bass clef staff. The same note name is positioned differently on both staffs. There are five lines and four spaces. From the bottom of the staff to the top, the treble clef staff lines begin with E-G-B-D-F and the spaces begin with F-A-C-E. The Bass clef staff lines start with G-B-D-F-A and space A-C-E-G. Once you understand this concept, you can use games to remember the musical letter names on a musical staff.
  1. Music Notes Flash Card Games

    • You can use flash cards to remember music letter notes and their position on a treble clef and bass clef staff. There are flashcards that have the letter name, line position and clef. Since the treble clef staff note names are easier to remember, pick out the flashcards with the music letter names for only the treble clef staff, and have a person show you each letter name slowly, then fast. Follow the same sequence for the bass clef note names.

    Mnemonic Game

    • Memory mnemonic is a simple strategy to help you remember musical notes. Implementing a mnemonic phrase for musical notes makes it easy to remember line notes. Creating a funny saying such as "Every Good Boy Does Fine", for example, helps to remember the line note names "E-G-B-D-F" on a treble staff. Practice seeing how fast you can create funny mnemonic sayings, using the seven letters in music. Then say your funny sayings aloud to remember music letters.

    Music Note Name Bingo Game

    • Take a blank sheet of paper and create 14 boxes. Seven boxes represent the treble clef note names, which are the same note names for the bass clef. Write the music note names in each box. Draw a grand staff, which is a staff with both treble and bass clef, on a large white board or on another blank sheet of paper. Draw it big enough to see.

Create small pieces of paper to cover the note names on your music bingo board. You can play this game with as many players as you want. Have a person draw a note on the grand staff. Whoever guesses the right note name can cover the note name on her bingo board. The person who gets all of the note names right on the bingo board can shout "Bingo!"

    Music Computer Games

    • Learn music note names through online music games. There are many websites that let you learn and play music note games. Some games require you to input the answer on a line for each note position on a musical staff according to the music clef; some use a mini keyboard to choose which key represents the note on the staff.
