Alternatives to Tolex

Tolex is an engineered vinyl material that is used to cover amplifiers and guitar cases. Tolex is a brand name that is only used for Fender and Rickenbacker products, but is often used as a generic name for a heavy-duty textured black vinyl amplifier cover. Alternatives to Tolex include Duratex, carpet, "rat fur" and paint.
  1. Duratex

    • Unlike Tolex, which is manufactured in sheets, Duratex is a liquid coating that is applied to the wood or other substrate with a brush or roller. It is available in eight textures and two colors: black and white.

    Carpet

    • Used for its low cost, ease of application and slight cushioning capabilities, carpet is a popular choice if you want to replace the current covering on your amplifier or add it to your custom cabinet build. Musicians will often use carpet with a short fiber length and use a spray adhesive to attach it to the wood case. Care should be taken on corners and edges to avoid fraying.

    "Rat fur"

    • "Rat fur" is a black or gray fiber carpeting that has a very loose and open covering of hair, or fur. This type of covering is also known as automotive carpet, speaker box carpet or enclosure carpet. The benefit of rat fur is the ease with which Velcro will stick to it.

    Paint

    • The least expensive and easiest-to-apply covering is paint or wood stain. Interior latex paint, or more durable stain, provides no cushioning or acoustic baffling properties for the amp or guitar case. The paint is simply a cosmetic treatment to improve the appearance of the wood or substrate.
