Homemade musical instrument crafts can be an ideal way to help younger students celebrate music day. Making their own music instruments can give kids something fun to do in class and teach them how music instruments work. Use empty gourds, oatmeal containers, shoe boxes and rubber bands to create musical instruments, then let your students put together a class band to demonstrate the instruments.
An instructional game kids of all ages can enjoy is music trivia. Offer prizes to the students who answer the most questions. Group questions in categories that cover classical composers, contemporary bands and performers, questions about music instruments and even terms in music composition.
Host a songwriting competition and encourage students to write either original song lyrics or music, depending upon their skill level. When the songs are turned in, encourage your students to perform their compositions in front of the class or put together a talent show featuring the original songs and perform for the school.
Put together a class play based on a famous Broadway musical or put together an original play based on the lives of famous music composers. Find parts for as many of your students as possible. If possible, perform some of the music live. This is a project you can involve the music teacher in as well.
