How to Create Your Own Music Puzzles From Songs of the '80s

The 1980s was a decade that saw hip hop and electronic pop music become popular. It was the decade of Live Aid, big hair and shoulder pads. Michael Jackson was at the peak of his powers, and a sassy young woman called Madonna became a world star. The 1980s were also a turbulent time both musically and socially. The decade began with the murder of John Lennon, and it ended with the Berlin Wall being dismantled. Creating music puzzles for this decade requires knowledge and a little bit of imagination.

Think of four different ideas for music puzzles relating to 1980s music. Use your own music knowledge, but still check your facts.

    • 2

List 10 popular songs of the 1980s, but omit a word or words from each of the titles. The artist should be named, but there should be no other clues for this puzzle. The selected songs should be songs that are still popular to this day, and the puzzle should include a mix of genres. An example for this puzzle would be Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do with It." Leave out four words, but the remaining three words should still enable the song title to be recognized.

    • 3

Make a list of clues for famous songs from the 1980s. There should be a list of a dozen songs, and the clues shouldn't be too tenuous. There should be one clue per song. These clues should relate directly to the song, for example, "A girl from the East" for David Bowie's "China Girl." The clues shouldn't include the artist's name. The selected songs for the puzzle should be hit singles from any year in the '80s.

    • 4

Select 10 songs, one from each year of the 1980s. The selected songs should be among the biggest hits of the decade. To make this puzzle more challenging, select hits from artists who are no longer very popular. Create a list of years from the '80s. Put each song in a year in which it wasn't a hit. The aim, for people attempting this puzzle, is to put the songs in the year that they were successful.

Use anagrams of songs that were performed at Live Aid -- either in the US or UK. Put the anagrams into two lists of 10. One list should contain songs performed at the US leg of Live Aid, and the second list should consist of songs performed at the UK leg. Include a mixture of songs that remain well-known, as well as including songs that have slipped into obscurity. Don't include too many of the latter, however.
