How to Play Gimme Shelter on the Rock Band Drums

Rock Band Drums is a virtual reality computer game developed by Harmonix Music Systems for the Nintendo DS, PlayStation, Wii and Xbox 360. You use a set of color-coded drum pads to play along with the songs. Colored cues appear on screen to instruct you which drums to hit next. You are scored on your drum accuracy and timing. There are various difficulty levels, each higher level calling for a more complete performance. You can play along with your favorite songs by selecting from the menu, then entering your preferred difficulty level.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your console. Each console "On" switch is located in a different place. Insert the Rock Band Drums disc and wait for the welcome screen to load. Turn on each drum pad using the switch on the underside. Use the arrow buttons on your controller to scroll through the song menu until you find "Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones. Select your difficulty level.

    • 2

Familiarize yourself with the layout of your kit before beginning. Gimme Shelter has a steady, full-kit groove for most of the song but there are also some ancillary percussion instruments such as scrapers. The snare drum is the pad in the center, marked red. The kick drum is the one you operate with your right foot, with the blue pad. The crash is the pad to your right, above the tom tom drums, which is marked green.

    • 3

Play two measures with just snare drum on the beat, then end the second measure with a kick and snare together, followed by a crash symbol on the first beat of the third measure. Repeat this pattern eight times.

    • 4

Play a "one and two and" fill at the end of the sixteenth measure, where "one" and "two" are snare strikes and the "and" is a kick-drum beat.

    • 5

Play the scraper on beat one of every measure, by hitting the yellow pad.

    • 6

Introduce a straight "around the kit" fill in the fourth bar of every chorus. Hit the snare on "one,", the kick on "and", the first tom on "two," the kick again on "and" and the second tom on "three," the kick on "and" and the snare on "four."

    • 7

Play the verse groove until the next chorus, at which point revert back to the chorus groove with the "around the kit" fill on every fourth bar.
