How to Identify an Ortofon Tonearm

Ortofon has been in the business of constructing high-end audio equipment since the early 1900s. Today, they are well known for producing high-quality tonearms and other turntable parts. Identifying an authentic Ortofon tonearm on a turntable is as easy as following a few steps. As the company manufactures replacement parts that are compatible with a number of other manufacturers turntables, it is possible to have a turntable with mixed and matched parts, so just because the table is made by someone else, you could still have an Ortofon tonearm.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise the clear protective dust cover to display the surface of the turntable and tonearm.

    • 2

Locate the tonearm. This is a metal arm hinged at the upper right corner of the player that houses the needle at its opposite end.

    • 3

Look for the inscribed name 'Ortofon,' which the company laser etches into the flat surface just in front of the counter weight and above the tracking force gauge. This can also be found directly above the pivot point where the tonearm is mounted. Ortofon has been inscribing their company name here since they began business, so if you do not find an inscription here then your tonearm was manufactured by a different company.
