How to Get a Good Tone in Your Singing Voice

Good singing tone quality is the product of proper breath support, posture and experience. By practicing daily, using healthy vocal techniques and taking care of your voice through appropriate dietary restrictions, you can improve your singing voice. The best singers understand how to stand and keep their vocal cords open to enable them to vibrate freely. These techniques may be learned at home and without the need for a vocal instructor. However, it is always a good idea to find a qualified instructor to help guide and develop your voice.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand tall with your neck straight and your head held high. Open your jaw slightly to reduce tension. Relax your shoulders by placing them slightly back. Stand with your feet spread shoulder-length apart. You may sit after you have developed the proper posture.

    • 2

Breathe in from your diaphragm by expanding your ribcage and taking air in to the stomach and sides.

    • 3

Feel your vocal cords vibrate when you sing and aim for a steady stream of air to keep your vocal cords vibrate evenly. Release any tension in your body while you sing. Tension will prevent your vocal cords from vibrating freely and reduce the quality of your tone.

Practice a five-note musical scale to increase your vocal tone. Women will start on middle C and men begin the octave below. Sing the first five notes of a major scale ascending and then descending. The whole time, keep your stomach firm and airflow consistent; as you move toward the higher notes slightly increase the airflow.
