Launch your computer’s audio-editing application.
Import each song you would like to include in your music montage onto its own audio track. Generally, this is accomplished by selecting “Open” from the program’s menu. Locate and select a music file you want to import it. Repeat to import additional songs.
Select the first audio track. Place the track in “edit” or “waveform” view. Sometimes this is accomplished by simply double-clicking on the track. If the program you are using does not feature an “edit” or “waveform” view, select the “Solo” option next to the first audio track. When solo is enabled, the only music you hear during playback is the audio on this one track.
Play back the first audio track to get a sense of the sound element associated with each portion of the audio waveform. Click and drag over the portion of the waveform that represents a part of the song you do not want to use. This will highlight that portion of the waveform. Select “Cut” from the program’s menu to remove the audio. Repeat as necessary to edit the current song down to a clip of the audio you want to use. As you edit the song down to an audio clip, the clip should start at the beginning of a music bar and conclude at the end of another music bar. Otherwise, the clips will sound choppy when they're pieced together.
Return to multitrack view. This is sometimes accomplished by selecting the multitrack view option from the program’s menu. If the program you are using does not feature a separate “edit” and “multitrack” view, deselect the “Solo” option on the first audio track.
Select the next audio track. Place the track in edit view or solo the track. Follow the same procedure you used in Step 4 to edit the song down to the clip of the audio you want to use.
Repeat Step 6 as many times as necessary to edit all of the songs in your music montage down to a clip.
Adjust the position of each audio waveform so that one song dovetails in another with respect to timing. This is sometimes accomplished by right-clicking on the waveform, then dragging it to the point on the track at which you want the song clip to it to come in. If you are unable to move the waveform this way, refer to your software’s “Help” pages to learn how to move the waveform to a different spot on its audio track. Instead of moving each waveform along its own track, you could also cut and paste each waveform (one right after another) onto a single track.
Press the Play button to hear your music montage.
