How to Make Weighted Keys

Making weighted keys will help make your electronic piano keyboard feel more like a real piano. Real piano keys are weighted, so many manufacturers of electronic piano keyboards, including Yamaha, Roland and Casio, offer options for weighted keys. You can set the degree of the weighted key by adjusting the springs. The springs will increase or decrease the tension of the keys. This has the advantages of developing finger strength and creating a realistic playing experience.

  1. Creating Weighted Keys

    • 1

      Remove the top of your electronic piano by removing the screws along the side of the piano.

      Turn the top of the keyboard over so that you can see the inside of each key. Depending on the number of keys on the keyboard you will need up to 88 springs.

      Place the spring at the front of the key and glue the spring into place for all of the keys.

      Replace the cover and screw in all of the remaining screws.

    Adjusting Weighted Keys

      Find the small ridged wheel located underneath the right hand side of the keyboard. If the manufacturer did not create the option for weighted keys, there will be no wheel.

      Turn the wheel clockwise to increase tension or counterclockwise to decrease tension.

      Test the keys by pressing down on them with your fingers. If the tension is too light, increase the tension of the keys.
