Leopold was born in Augsburg, Germany, and studied music at the Benedictine University of Salzburg. After completing his studies, he became a violinist in the court orchestra of the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. In 1747, he married Anna Maria Pertl, and the couple had seven children, of whom Wolfgang Amadeus was the youngest.
Leopold was a strict but loving father and teacher. He began teaching Wolfgang music at a young age, and Wolfgang quickly showed a prodigious talent. Leopold took Wolfgang and his older sister Maria Anna on several concert tours throughout Europe, and they were met with great success.
