How could Beethoven control the orchestra?

Ludwig van Beethoven conducted the orchestra by waving a baton. He held a wooden stick in his hand when he conducted, which he used to indicate the tempo, rhythm and dynamics of the music to the musicians. He would also use facial expressions and body language to communicate with the orchestra.
