Would an orchestra want to sound dissonant?

While dissonance can be a powerful compositional tool, most orchestras aim for a harmonious and balanced sound. Dissonance, by definition, is the combination of two or more notes that sound unpleasant or clash when played together. While some contemporary composers may intentionally use dissonance to create a specific atmosphere or tension within a piece, generally speaking, orchestras strive for a consonant and pleasing aural experience for the audience.
