Why are woodwind instruments called the reed section in an orchestra?

Not woodwind instruments but an ensemble or grouping of musical instruments playing the higher wind instruments is a "reed section" if most or all of those instruments include reeds, whereas the low wind instruments are grouped in the "brass section".

Most musical instruments which are classified as woodwinds produce musical sounds by the vibration of a reed in a mouthpiece against the player's breath.
