What are the numbers in front of notes piano?

The numbers in front of notes in piano music are called _"accidentals"_ and are used to modify the pitch of a note. Each accidental has a specific function:

- Sharp (#): Raises the pitch of a note by a semitone (half step)

- Flat (b): Lowers the pitch of a note by a semitone

- Natural (♮): Cancels a previous sharp or flat accidental, returning the note to its original pitch.

Placement: Accidentals are placed before the note head on the staff. For example:

- C# means to play the note C raised by one semitone (to C♯)

- G♭ means to play the note G lowered by one semitone (to G♭)

- F♮ means to play the note F without sharps or flats (cancelling any previous accidentals)

Accidentals can also affect notes in chords, scales and melodies. A proper understanding of accidentals and their placement is crucial for accurate music performance and interpretation.
