What is a wah guitar?

A wah-wah guitar or pedal creates the wah-wah effect associated with the sound of a human vocalist. It is achieved by moving the speaker diaphragm in and out of phase with respect to the strings, to accentuate the resonant frequency of the guitar. Some wah-wah pedals also have a tone control used to set the range of frequencies affected.
