How did Bartolomeo Cristofori invent the piano?

Bartolomeo Cristofori did not invent the piano, he invented the "gravicembalo col piano e forte", regarded as one of the predecessors of the modern piano. His invention was a keyboard instrument that, unlike the harpsichord, was capable of producing a note with varying degrees of loudness by modifying the velocity and force applied to the key.
