What is the difference between a D chord and D-F-sharp chord?

There is no such thing as a D-F-sharp chord. Chords are named after their root note, which is the lowest note in the chord. F-sharp is the seventh note of the D major scale, so it cannot be the root of a D chord. Could you mean Dm or Dsus?
