Pitched percussion instruments generally consist of:
- bars and tubes, the fundamental musical materials of metallophones and xylophones;
- membranes, of the tuned drums;
- skins in tension, the bases for most timpani instruments.
Examples of different kinds of pitched percussion instruments would include a glockenspiel or xylophone (bars); timpani (membranes and skins in tension); tubular bells/chimes(tubes); and a celesta (bars in combination with skin-covered resonators struck directly by hammer mechanisms
