When did the flute first appear?

Flutes, in one form or another, have existed for more than 40,000 years. One of the oldest existing musical instruments yet found, a fragment of a bone flute dated to circa 43,000 to 35,000 BP, was discovered in Hohle Fels Cave in southwestern Germany.
