When and where was piano first developed?

The piano was first developed in the early 18th century in Italy. The earliest known piano was invented in 1700 by Bartolomeo Cristofori, an Italian harpsichord maker from Padua. Cristofori called his invention the "gravicembalo col piano e forte", which translates to "harpsichord with soft and loud".
