Why did poulenc compose his flute sonata?

Poulenc's flute sonata is often speculated to have been composed as a personal tribute to his dear friend, the flutist Marcel Moyse. However, there is little concrete evidence to support this claim. Poulenc frequently played chamber music with Moyse and dedicated his flute sonata to the late Louise Cruppi.
