What is the xylophone family?

The xylophone family also known as the mallet percussion family consists of a number of musical instruments that are played by striking resonators of wood or metal with mallets.

This family includes the following instruments:

* Xylophone: A musical instrument consisting of a graduated series of wooden bars suspended by cords over a resonating chamber, played with mallets.

* Marimba: A musical instrument consisting of a graduated series of wooden bars suspended over resonating tubes (often made of metal or wood), played with mallets.

* Vibraphone: A musical instrument consisting of a graduated series of metal bars suspended over resonating tubes (usually made of metal or fiberglass), played with mallets. The vibraphone has a damper mechanism that changes the pitch of the bars by slowing down the vibration of the resonators.

* Glockenspiel: A musical instrument consisting of a graduated series of metal bars with a high pitch, suspended over resonating chambers (usually made of wood or metal), played with mallets.

* Celesta: A musical instrument consisting of a graduated series of metal bars with a low pitch, suspended over resonating chambers (usually made of wood or metal), played with mallets.

These instruments are all typically used in orchestras, concert bands, and other musical ensembles, and are all well-known for their beautiful and resonant sounds.
