What did the first piano look like?

The first piano was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori in 1700 and was called a "gravicembalo col piano e forte" in Italian, which means "harpsichord with soft and loud." It had a wooden frame with metal strings stretched across it, and hammers covered with leather that were activated by keys to produce sound. The hammers would strike strings of varying lengths, which determined the pitch of the notes. The instrument had a larger and taller body than a harpsichord and produced a richer, more dynamic sound.
