Grieg also composed extensively for the violin. His Violin Sonata No. 1 in F major, Op. 8 (1867) is one of his most popular works for the instrument, and it has been recorded by numerous violinists. He also wrote a Violin Sonata No. 2 in G major, Op. 13 (1867) and a Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 36 (1881).
Grieg also played viola and cello, but he did not compose as much for these instruments as he did for the piano and violin. He did write a few pieces for viola, including a Romance for Viola and Orchestra, Op. 40 (1884) and a Cello Concerto in A major, Op. 33 (1883).
In addition to his skills as a performer, Grieg was also a gifted conductor. He conducted the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra from 1880 to 1882, and he also guest-conducted orchestras all over Europe.
