What is the real name of a piano?
There is no "real name" for the instrument commonly known as a piano. The word "piano" is short for "pianoforte," which is a combination of the Italian words "piano" (meaning "soft" or "quiet") and "forte" (meaning "loud" or "strong"). The term "pianoforte" was coined in the early 18th century to distinguish the instrument from its predecessors, the harpsichord and the clavichord, which had a limited dynamic range. The pianoforte was able to produce both soft and loud sounds, hence the name. Over time, the term "pianoforte" was shortened to "piano," which is the name most commonly used today.
