Do bass players use the thumb or pick?

Bass players usually alternate between their fingers and a pick, depending on the desired sound and playing style. The fingers can produce a smoother, warmer sound with greater control over dynamics, while the pick can provide a brighter, clearer attack and increased volume and precision. Different techniques, like slapping and popping, which involves slapping the string with the side of the thumb and quickly pulling it off to produce a percussive effect, also contribute to a distinctive sound. Ultimately, bass players adapt their choice based on the genre, musical preferences, and context of the performance.
