How did claude debussy learn to play piano?

Claude Debussy began studying piano at the age of seven with Marie Mauté de Fleurville, an eccentric virtuoso pianist at the Paris Conservatory. She taught him to focus on tone colour and sound rather than finger technique. At the insistence of his parents he also studied musical theory which he loathed and left the conservatory to become an amateur player for several years.
