Where did the alto sax come from?

Adolphe Sax, a Belgian musical instrument designer and inventor, created the alto saxophone in the 1840s. Sax was inspired to create a family of instruments that would fill the gap between the high-pitched woodwinds and the low-pitched brass instruments. He designed a series of instruments in different sizes and shapes, including the alto saxophone. The alto saxophone is a member of the saxophone family, which includes the soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, and bass saxophone.
