What finish is used on guitars?

Nitrocellulose lacquer

* Traditional finish used on many high-end guitars

* Made from cellulose nitrate dissolved in solvents

* Produces a thin, hard finish that enhances the natural resonance of the wood

* Gives guitars a "vintage" look and feel

Polyurethane

* More durable than nitrocellulose lacquer

* Provides excellent protection against wear and tear

* Used on a majority of modern guitars

* Can result in a thicker finish on guitars

Shellac

* Natural finish made from lac bug resin dissolved in alcohol

* Produces a thin, protective coating that enhances the wood's natural beauty

* Used on some acoustic guitars

* Requires regular maintenance if they get used as frequently

Oil

* Natural finish applied by rubbing oil into the wood

* Allows the wood to breathe producing a rich, resonant sound with natural wood tone/finish

* Requires regular maintenance

Note: Some guitars may even utilize more than one type of finish, this process may even require applying layers
