Why does a saxophone need reed?

A saxophone does not need a reed. While many woodwind instruments, such as clarinets and oboes, use reeds to produce sound, saxophones are classified as single-reed instruments. Instead of a reed, a saxophone uses a metal mouthpiece that the musician blows air through to produce sound. The mouthpiece is attached to the body of the saxophone, which amplifies the sound and gives it its distinctive tone.
