What does the musical note breve mean?

In musical notation, a breve (or double whole note in American English) is a note which lasts for two whole notes, or four half notes. It is written as a hollow oval note head with a stem. The breve is the longest note value in common use in Western music notation. It is used to represent very long sustained tones, such as the low pedal notes in an organ piece.
