When did clarinets start?
The history of the clarinet goes back to the late 17th century, when an instrument maker from Nuremberg, Germany named Johann Christian Denner created the first-known clarinet. He combined features of the chalumeau and the bassoon to create an instrument that had a wider range and was more versatile. Denner's clarinet had seven holes and a single reed, and was pitched in D. It was also known as a "clarinetto", which is the diminutive of "clarino", the Italian word for "little trumpet".
