What gauge does a normal electric guitar use?

Electric guitars typically use strings with gauges ranging from .009 to .052 inches (.23 to 1.32 millimeters). The most common gauge set is .010-.046 inches (.25-.118 mm), which is often referred to as "regular" or "standard" strings. Lighter gauge strings are easier to play but have a thinner, brighter sound, while heavier gauge strings have a thicker, warmer sound but can be more difficult to play. The ideal string gauge for a particular guitar depends on the player's preferences, the guitar's scale length, and the desired sound.
