Why must acoustic guitars have an hourglass shape?

Guitar bodies do not necessarily have to be the traditional "hourglass" shape: different shapes do not significantly alter their functionality. Guitars come in several body shapes designed primarily for aesthetic and sonic appeal rather than a necessity based on the instrument's acoustic properties.
