Who created reggae?
Reggae's true origin lies with mento, the popular folk/calypso sound first created during the second decade of the 20th century on the then British territories of Jamaica and, to a lesser extent, its Cayman Islands colony to its northwest. Mento emerged as the music and dance of the poorer black Jamaican classes of that era after an island economy driven for 200 years exclusively to European export-driven cultivation first went through an era of labor shortages from manumissions of slaves from nearby Hispaniola after 1804, then through an extended depression as that European market demand decreased through the turn of the century
