About Pagan Music

People love music that uplifts and inspires them, and Pagans are no exceptions. Many Pagans enjoy music that speaks to their myths and beliefs, celebrates their holidays and special occasions or moves them during religious rites and rituals. While Pagan music does not often find it's way into the mainstream, it is there if you know where to look.
  1. Types

    • Pagan music varies in style, from repetitive chants to New Age alternative rhythms and from tribal drums to heavy metal. What seems to define it is not a particular sound but the themes. Music that rings to the tune of ancient cultures, lyrics that revolve around myths or a love of nature and chanting with a spiritual flavor can all qualify as Pagan music.

    Pagan Artists

    • Most Pagan artists don't have success breaking into the mainstream. Some of the more popular and well known Pagan artists are alternative metal band Godsmack, Gwydion Pendderwen with his catchy tunes and lovingly crafted Pagan lyrics and the haunting chants and melodies of Reclaiming, an international earth-based spiritual community and political action group.

    Crossover Artists

    • Some music is specifically made by Pagans, for Pagans. However, other music and musicians just have a sound or style that Pagans embraced. For example, Loreena McKennitt's New Age Celtic sound that tell stories of myths, history and spirituality, and Red Thunder's Native American/Rock fusion, have found a place in the hearts of Pagan music lovers.

    Usage

    • Music is often incorporated into Pagan spiritual practices, used to aid in meditations, to raise power or energy during Pagan rituals or purely for celebratory reasons. Drummers and other amateur musicians are found at Pagan gatherings, who come together to spontaneously express their spiritual rapture through music.

    Finding

    • Thanks to the Internet, Pagan music is increasingly easier to find and enjoy. Internet websites such as Earth Tones Studio and Serpentine Music specialize in Pagan music. Internet broadcasting sites, such as the Pagan Lounge Radio, make it possible to tune into Pagan music online.
