How to DJ Hip-Hop Songs With No Intro

Mastering your technique as a DJ is guaranteed to get a party rocking. As early as the 1960s, turntable beat mixing became a staple at clubs and parties in New York City, according to Disc Jockey 101. As technology developed, it became less of a hassle to mix the beat of one song over another. Most hip-hop music begins with an instrumental "intro" and ends with an instrumental "outro" to help mixers overlay beats. Popping off hip-hop songs with no intro without a hitch is possible only if you follow the right steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Listen to the song you intend to play just prior to the song without an intro. Count the beats per minute in the song. Begin counting at the first beat of the song. Count the beats for 60 seconds. Multiply the number of beats for every minute of the song. A three-minute song with 35 beats per minute, for example, will have 105 beats in the song. Memorize the beat pattern so you are completely familiar with the song. Most hip-hop tracks have a maximum of 115 beats, while club tracks may have upwards of 125.

Choose a song without an intro that matches — or closely matches — the same pitch as the previous song to avoid abrupt changes in sound quality.

    • 3

Cue the song without an intro on a professional-grade disc jockey CD player with an "instant start" button. Start the song without an intro on the third or second to the last beat of the previous song.

    • 4

Listen to the sound quality of the song through your headphones. Place your hand on your DJ turntable to break the previous song slowly. Adjust the pitch and bass of the CD player for the current song as necessary.
